Mike D. Abate — Tennis Pro
Mike Abate (10s4u) has been teaching, coaching, and directing tennis programs in Southeastern Connecticut for over 30 years. Mike played collegiate tennis at Florida Southern College and played on the satellite (WATCH) circuit in Florida and the southern states. Mike has a BS in Biology (pre-med) and Business Management from Florida Southern College, and MS degrees from Purdue University (Molecular Genetics), and Washington State University (Exercise Physiology and the Biomechanics of Sports Movement). Mike was the assistant coach at Florida Southern College and the PAC-10 Washington State University Cougars. As an academic instructor he taught courses in Human Anatomy, Physiology, Advanced Tennis Training and Tennis Biomechanics.
Mike has extensive experience in training junior tennis players. He was the director of the High Performance Junior National Tennis Team at the Park Meadow Pro Training Center in Fort Meyers, Florida. He has directed and coached New England USTA Junior Tennis teams from Old Saybrook, East Lyme, and Waterford to over 20 State Championships and one New England Championship team that competed at Nationals in South Carolina. Currently he is coaching the ECC powerhouse East Lyme Vikings Boys tennis team. Mike has led the Vikings to 10 straight ECC Team Championships, over 10 individual titles, and produced an individual state champion. Mike has also been awarded the "All-Area Coach of the Year" multiple times.
He has directed and instructed many events with high profile and grand slam champions. Professionals such as Tom Gullikson, Jared Palmer, Johan Kriek, Taylor Dent and others have worked with Mike and the Player's Edge to offer those events.
Mike Abate is the Tennis Director of 10s4u; a full-service provider of everything that is tennis. Each week you will find Mike offering adult and junior private and group lessons, open clinics, point-play opportunities as well as tournaments and other fun events at the Old Saybrook Racquet Club and surrounding communities.
